Workable Solutions: Tackling the Youth Unemployment Crisis
International Youth Foundation Releases Third Edition of YOUth Magazine
Spotlight on the Global Youth Unemployment Crisis
Baltimore, MD – Young people are being hit the hardest in the economic downturn. The numbers of unemployed youth worldwide are rising. What can be done about it? These are the dominant themes of the Spring 2009 edition of YOUth, the award-winning publication of the International Youth Foundation. In its “Spotlight” article, experts in the field of youth employment discuss global trends, the strategies for success, and the continuing challenges facing today’s young people as they struggle to join the job market.
Also in this issue, 2008 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari speaks passionately about the role young people can play in rebuilding countries shattered by war, and Tanzania’s Minister of Education extols the benefits of a new low-cost technology-based initiative now boosting learning in some of his country’s poorest schools. Johnson & Johnson also sheds light on their company’s CSR philosophy and plans to expand work in Africa.
YOUth provides a global audience of corporate executives, civil society organizations, governments and youth leaders with news and commentary on positive youth development. Readers can also learn directly from the beneficiaries of IYF programs. In this latest edition, the teenage daughter of Chinese migrant worker shares her story and a young social entrepreneur working with impoverished women in Brazil speaks out.

War-Affected Youth Benefit from Education and Market-Driven Skills Training
In 2006, responding to the high illiteracy rates and limited access to education, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) brought their Youth Education Pack (YEP) program to northern Uganda. Operating in 10 conflict-affected countries around the world, the YEP program provides war-affected youth with literacy skills, life skills and vocational training. While the program emphasizes basic literacy and psycho-social support, the livelihood skills offered are an integral tool in helping participating youth successfully reintegrate into their communities. Take a look, this project offers an uplifting example of facilitating youths into employment in most challenging frame conditions.
For LEDNA this is an example of a programme that sits well within our livlihoods development and workforce development programmes. Thanks to USAID for their knowledge centre www.microlinks.org for sharing this.

These projects will cost us much but we trust that we can raise the necessary resources to make it happen. When completed, these will be part of a Centre of Excellence for youth development and empowerment in Ghana ahd the West African sub-region.

Youth-led group support Malaria Programme in West Africa
by hayford - 27/03/2009
The West African sub-region is expected to have a youth-led initiative geared towards supporting the 44 African nations that signed the historic declaration in Abuja in 2000 to scale malaria cases down to 50 per cent by year 2010 and near zero deaths by 2015.
A youth-led NGO, Volunteer Partnerships for West Africa (VPWA), is mobilizing volunteers from around the world for an intensive malaria awareness project dubbed Kick Malaria Out (KMO), which is an annual event to be held for the next six years to reach it objectives.
